Boracay

Description

Kitesurfing in Boracay Island

Out of the 7,000 Philippine islands, Boracay is ranked by many sources as the most beautiful. Located c. 300km south of Manila and 2km off the northwest tip of Panay Island in the Western Visayas region, the island offers stunning white sand beaches, a laid back atmosphere, great nightlife, and, most of all, the best in kitesurfing.

The kitesurfing hotspot: Bulabog Beach

On Boracay's east coast you will find the one of the best kitespots worldwide, Bulabog Beach: A massive turquoise lagoon with perfect flat water conditions lying beside a 2.5km long white sandy beach. The lagoon is standing depth at low tide, offering perfect learning conditions for beginners. At high tide, more advanced kitesurfers can enjoy the chop and moreover the small to medium waves breaking on the coral reef protecting the bay. The spot generally is blessed by constant trade winds of c. 20 knots, blowing side-onshore from the Northeast. You'll find all facilities needed at this beach, including the IKO-accredited kiteschool Isla Kitesurfing Boracay, the only school on the island with a safety boat.

Freeriding at White Beach

You will find another kitesurf gem just 700m across at the island's west coast. White Beach is yet another white sand beach with clear blue and green water, often ranked as one of the ten most beautiful beaches worldwide. This place is a good option at SW winds that prevail in the rainy season.

Riding the waves at Golf Course and Puka Beach

Furthermore, on the northern shore of the island there are two spots known for waves: Golf Course, a good option when Bulabog gets too crowded, and Puka Beach (for NW winds).

You will find all facilities needed for a perfect kitesurfing holiday, including kitesurfing schools, shops, rental and repair services, rescue services, and great hotels and restaurants.

When to go

Climate

The best period to visit Boracay is during winter (between November and April), when the northeastern monsoon offers reliable winds as The most reliable months are in December, January, February and March, after which the wind usually blows from the East, right onshore at Bulabog beach. In summer (July to November) the SW monsoon prevails, meaning one thing only: rain. Water temperatures are between 26°C and 30°C year-round, so no need to bring a wetsuit!

Getting there

Access to Boracay Island could be the only drawback to this kitesurf destination: It will be hard to find a direct flight to the Philippine's main entry point Manila. Most flights include stopovers at Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong or Dubai. From Manila - where an overnight stay may be necessary - transfer to either Caticlan or Kalibo airport on Panay Island (45 minute flight), from where a boat can be taken to Boracay (20 minute boat trip).

Getting around

Getting around at Boracay is easy. The island is small (only 8km long and 1km wide), so all kitesurf spots are within reach by motorbike, mountainbike or even by foot. Tricycles (or 'trikes') are still the main mode of transportation and are cheap. They cost around 10PhP when used as a taxi, and alternatively they can be rented for 150PhP per hour or for 400PhP per day. As cars are not allowed on Baracay, no car rental services are available.

What else to do

Beside kitesurfing, scuba diving is the other activity for which people visit Boracay. There are over 30 beautiful dive sites within half an hour of the island, suitable for both beginning and expert divers. Island hopping is another great way to spend the day. Rent a boat to take you to one of the twelve beaches at the island (some are only accessible by boat), or visit one of the islets in front of Boracay. With crystal clear waters, caves to swim in, and a picnic at one of the coves, island hopping will be a perfect alternative for those seldom days without wind. The island offers great nightlife too.
