Cabarete

Description

Kitesurfing in Cabarete

The north coast of the Dominican Republic has been known as surfers paradise for a long time. While many good spots are available along the coastline, kitesurfers won't have to look further than the town of Cabarete, where several of the greatest kitebeaches worldwide are found.

Kite Beach

At Cabarete Kite Beach, located about two miles east from town, you will likely find the best conditions on the island. Protected by a reef, the bay offers perfect flat water conditions for beginners and freeriders. Advanced kiters can also head out beyond the reef and find good waves, generally 2-3m high. The trade winds create consistent winds at Cabarete, most of the time from the east and usually giving the spot ideal side-onshore kitesurf conditions.

Cabarete main beach

The conditions for kitesurfing are similarly beautiful at the main beach in Cabarete, which has a nice wide beach for launching and landing (much larger than at Kitebeach). At this spot you will find the Laurel Eastman Kiteboarding School, which offers kitesurfing lessons, rentals and sales of kiteboarding equipment. It is located by the Millennium Resort and Spa and the Ocean Dream Condos.

Kitespots Bozo Beach and El Encuentro

Should you require some variety, other great spots nearby are (among others) Bozo Beach, which has featured the Kiteboarding World Championships every year since 2001, and El Encuentro, which has the cleanest reef break in the area and is a thrill for every waverider.

All in all, with wordclass kitespots, excellent accommodation in all ranges and a relaxing nightlife, Cabarete is one of the best kitesurfing destinations imaginable.

When to go

Climate

With a tropical climate and trade winds allowing for up to 300 kiteable days each year, the Dominican republic offers great conditions most of the year. The period of October to December is the only exception, being rather wet and windless. The strength and consistency of the wind is highest in summer, with average wind speeds of 20-25 knots (vs. 15-20 knots in winter). The water ranges between 26-29°C (79-84°F), so only bring your boardshorts!

There is pretty good infrastructure on the island, with plenty of bus routes, and you will likely find everything you're looking for in Cabarete itself and at Kite Beach, so car hire is probably not necessary. If you do however want to look further, mopeds and cars can be hired for very little.

What else to do

The stunning beaches at Cabarete are by themselves reason enough to spend a holiday there, offering everything from simple relaxation to the thrill of cliff jumping for example. Need more action next to surfing? The Dominican is also famous for its scuba diving possibilities, and mountain biking, kayaking, abseiling and hiking are possible too. A little outside of Cabarete you can find several lagoons, including the Blue Lagoon, which is famous for being bottomless. Last but not least, if you visit Cabarete between January and March, you will likely have the possibility to go whale watching at Semana Peninsula. Cabarete has great nightlife as well.
