Description

Kitesurfing in Cape Hatteras

Hatteras is a cape on the coast of North Carolina. Also known as the Outer Banks, this region has the best kitesurfing conditions on the East Coast, with waves on the Atlantic east side and perfect flat waters between the cape and mainland. Combined, they result in hundreds of miles of kitesurfing playground.

Freeriding in the Pamlico Sound

Most of the spots lie on the southern end of Hatteras Island. Canadian Hole and Salvo Day Use Area are perfect for beginners, both situated on the lagoon (called the Pamlico Sound). Both spots offer wide, sandy beaches and shallow, flat water conditions.

Riding the waves on the Atlantic

Experienced kitesurfers are usually found on the Atlantic side, where plenty of spots are found as well. These include The Ferry Docks at the very southern end, The Bath House, Frisco, Lighthouse Beach, Askin's Creek and - our top pick - Mile 31. Popular among surfers too, Mile 31 offers a long and wide beach and a great beach break producing small to medium waves. The spot is coincidentally located at mile marker 31 on the coastal road.

When to go

Climate

Hatteras has a very long season for kitesurfing, blessed by strong and consistent winds from April until October. In this period, wind is usually side-onshore within the Pamlico Sound and side-offshore at the Atlantic side. Water temperatures can be cold - although less so on the inside of the cape - so a full wetsuit is needed in winter while a shorty will do fine in summer.

Getting there

The nearest international airport to Hatteras is Raleigh-Durham, with daily flights to most major US airports, to Canada and to the UK. The airport is 180 miles (280km) from Hatteras. If you don't plan to rent a car (discouraged), there is a train connection to the Outer Banks.

Getting around

We recommend hiring a car for your stay in Hatteras. First of all, the airport is relatively far (180 miles or 280km). Second, you will be able explore the area and all of the kitesurfing spots in it. Besides, car rental is reasonably cheap (US$100 per week).

What else to do

On an off-day when the wind isn't blowing, you can go surfing on the waves on the Atlantic. Or try wakeboarding the flat waters on the west shore (US$150 per hour). Want to take it slower for a day? Rent a boat (US$100 per hour; up to 6 people).
