Description
Kitesurfing in Ceara, Brazil
Ceara, one of Brazil's 27 states which is located in the Northeast of the country, is known for its extensive coastline of 573 kilometres of (white) sand. Unsurprisingly, the area is packed with great kitesurf spots. The combination of reliable SE trade winds and a perfect mix in spot types makes this region the ideal kitesurf destination for any kitesurfer in winter. Beginners and freeriders can enjoy the numerous lagoons, while experienced surfers can enjoy the waves at sea.
Cumbuco
In the eastern part of the state, the fishing village of Cumbuco is where most kitesurfers set up, around which many great spots are found. The 5km long, white sand beach right next to the town is a great spot with easy-going conditions (although high tide will create some chop). North of Cumbuco the Cauipe lagoon can be found, which is the perfect place to improve your skills. The freshwater lagoon has shallow and calm waters, has very consistend winds and is flanked by large sand dunes. Only downside is that the place can get crowded, so get here early or move up further to Lagoa Taiba. This lagoon is somewhat smaller than Cauipe, but you will likely have much more room as there will be less kites in the air.
In between of these two lagoons is the port of Pecem, where good swells will deliver 1.5m high waves suitable for the more advanced riders.
Paracuru
Another option to base yourself is the town of Paracuru, a quieter town 70km north of Cumbuco, which is known as one of the most beautiful big wave spots in Ceara. Winds, usually onshore, are stronger than in Cumbuco (around 30 knots or more). A reef protects the kitesurf area and offers flat conditions at low tide.
Other recommended kitespots
With plenty of other good kitesurf spots north of Paracuru (Loginha, Guajiru, Flexeiras, Embuaca, Mundau) and south of Cumbuco (Barra Nova, Lagoa Uruau, Parajuru (recommended flat water spot!), Fortim, Canoa Quebrada), this region offers endless possibilities for every kitesurfer.
Cumbuco is a Great Spot to Kitesurf! Wind starts to pick up at 10.30 - 11.00 and can go up to 16.00 - 17.00 You can either go to the sea where you can find some really nice waves! (1meter - 2 meter tops) But if it's too much for you, then you can always go to a Lagoon (Lagoa do Cauípe) that is a 15 min ride from Cumbuco... You can pick up a buggy in the beach and ride along it. But I don't advice the Lagoon, since it is a very small place and this is a very kitesurfers' crowdy place. Best advice: go to the sea!
Best kitesurf spot in the planet.. wind, sunny, waves, flat water, and last but not least the brazilian people.
