Strong, steady wind that is best in the late afternoon as the sun sets. We spent the month of June here and it was windy basically every day. Bring the small kites. I was on a 6m/8m but could have kited more if I had a 4 or a 5 with me. If you are a beginner stay at Vagabond or Attitude as they have good rescue boat services (if not its just a long walk up the beach but pretty safe). We stayed at Nomade and they very seldom had a boat in the water (among other complaints - wouldn't recommend it). If you can afford the hefty price tag Attitude is best as its right at the speed spot otherwise its 45min upwind to get home so still possible to kite there. Nice spot. Not butter flat in the lagoon but the wind is consistent.

I went there in mid November 2013 for a week and during May 2014 for another week. I was / am a beginner. So I went here because there are IKO certified and because the spot is huge . Teachers are skilled kitesurfers indeed, and been teaching for a long time, but some are better than others at teaching / explaining . The spot is huge, you dont have to walk far to get to the water. Security is there in water during the day and teacher are alwaysto come to my rescue when i was stuck / drifting... with kite in water. Staff is friendly, food is excellent though i was sceptical. But everyday food was different. Bungalows : Tents are now gone. replaced with new bungalows constructed end of 2013. some are basic , some are more decorated ( more expensive), but hey you are in the desert, so you got a bed, hot water , a shower and a bassin : you re a king, don't complain! A nice SPA area for all afterkite much needed massage ( at extra cost of course). The site overall : well kept and well maintained, willingness to continuously improve the "resort" : more plants planted, a cable park, new kites...

I have been to Dakhla recently and stayed in Dakhla Attitude Hotel. Amazing how it has changed. Bungalows are brand new, the tents have the traditional vibe, food is excellent, mood night life and the kiting is just amazing. They have the best placement in the lagoon and the sport center is completely equipped. With new kite and windsurf material. I will not think is twice, if I go back I will stay there and make the best out of mu kiting!

Sounds excellent Klaus, but I´m not surprised to find a positive review since you are the general manager.... Anyhow...I hoping to see you in June as I'm currently in the process of confirming our trip to Dakhla Attitude. Hope it's as great as you described!

  • Klaus

Hi Taco, I have not been Dakhla Attitude's manager for ever and as you I also came here before. All what I say is true, it's posted on FB with more then 10,000LIKES, on our web site and on TripAdvisor. All Dragon BG are completely new with crystal windows, 7 new vips, Windhunter camp, Bedouin tents... all the material in the sport center is BEST from 2012-2013, staff is highly motivated... anyway, it sounds like if you wish it would be the other way around or that I'm cheating because now I work here... try it out and then let everybody know what you think. Dakhla Attitude is the best hotel in Dakhla, at the best spot, the only IKO affiliated center and with all services anyone can ask for... It is great as I describe... actually, better! See you soon!

I went twice to Dakhla and stayed at Rio Aguilla the firs time and Dakhla attitude the second time. Both have their pros and cons. Dakhla Attitude: + lots of accomodation, tent or bungalows to accomodate all needs + a few bars to chill out, pool table and so on - the showers smell or rotten eggs - the tents are a bit far from the dinning area Rio Aguilla: + a lot smaller than Dakhla attitude + great view of the spot, the camp is placed a bit higher and is overlooking the lagoon + a bit more family like. Great if you're here to kite rather than going out - kite rescue is more or less inexistant - tents were a bit run-down when we went but they seem to have changed them since

Hello I'm planning to go to Dakhla in August, but I would like to know about the weather conditions. Are the hot temperatures bearable, especially if Dakhla altitude doesn't have air conditioning. Also are the winds constant during that month. I'm a beginner and have had bad experiences learning to kite and never having enough wind. Thanks

Hello Nathalie - I went their August 2011. I was more or less a beginner then. The wind was good every day (around 17-25 knots). It is the most consistent (for wind) place I have ever been. Surprisingly, it isn't hot due to the wind. You will need a sweatshirt in the evenings as it gets cool quickly when the sun goes down. No need for air conditioning. I wore a shorty when kiting too. hope this helps, Patrick

Description

Kitesurfing in Dakhla

Dakhla, situated on a small peninsula at the southern coast of Morocco, is paradise for kitesurfers of any level. Winds blow consistently and all year round (15-35 knots), and there is an unbelievable mix in water conditions, ranging from butter-flat water to big waves. The only drawback may be that Dakhla is a bit harder to reach than other kitesurf destinations… but it is definitely worth it, a small price to pay for a guaranteed great kitesurfing holiday!

Freeriding at the lagoon

There are basically two choices where to kitesurf. There's huge, blue lagoon with the smoothest water conditions and large standing-depth areas, the perfect place for beginners and freeriders. There is ample spce for everybody, both around the lagoon when launching your kite as on the lagoon itself, where downwinders as long as 30 kilometres can be made!

Wave riding at the ocean

At the ocean side of Dakhla on the other hand, there are amazing waves that are not to be missed by advanced wave riders. Waves here are usually 2-4 metres high, and on big wind days 5 metres is not uncommon.

Climate

At Dakhla, winds blow consistently between 15 and 35 knots all year long, day and night. July, August and September are the months with the strongest winds on average, when it is best to bring a kite smaller than 10m. But even in winter, the low wind season, kitesurfing is still possible with kites of 10m-12m. Water temperatures vary between 20°C (70°F) in winter (shorty recommended) to 28°C (82°F) in summer, when boardshorts are all you need.

Getting there

There aren't any direct flights to Dakhla airport, so you will have to transfer at Casablanca, where you might have to pass the night as there are only three flights per week between Casablanca and Dakhla. At Dakhla airport, taxis are available at an affordable price. The airport is only a 15 minute drive away from most hotels and kitespots.

Getting around

The city centre is small enough to walk around, and if you choose you acommodation wisely, you will not have too much trouble getting to kitespots on foot either. Petits taxis are available for short distances. If you wish to explore the region and its further kitespots lying off the beaten track, renting a car - preferably 4x4 - is advised.
