Description

Kitesurfing in Mauritius

While Mauritius is already known to the world as paradise, its west coast should be known as kitesurfer's paradise. The coastline consists of almost nothing but white sand beaches and turquoise lagoons. SE trade winds provide consistent surfing conditions (between May and November). Flat water conditions are available as well as the cleanest of waves. What else do you require?

Le Morne kitespots

Mauritius' main kitesurf spots are centred around Le Morne, a town beneath a huge basaltic rock of c. 550 metres, Le Morne Brabant. The area has two perfect flat-water lagoons, which provide everything needed for beginners as well as for advanced freeriding kitesurfers. The Le Morne Kite School is based here with a team of IKO-qualified instructors.

The area is also known for its many great reef breaks: Among others, the Inner Reef, a spot where you can train to ride your first waves; Chameaux, a bigger break suitable for the more experienced surfers; and One Eye and Manawa, the island's best known spots, but definitely for the pros only.

When to go

Climate

With SE trades year-round at Mauritius and thermal strengthening around Le Morne, only January, February and March are months that this destination should be avoided by kitesurfers. The best time to go is between July and October when winds are strongest. Water temperatures vary between 23-27°C, meaning a shorty in winter and boardshorts only in summer.
