This spot is 12 Km from Jericoacoara, it is a small fishing village but there are Pousadas but renting a flat would be less expensive. Kite conditions: wind ~25 knot cross/cross-onshore / water temp. 25-28°C / peak season july - january I am beginner, so it is hard for me to say if it is a good spot for advanced riders...however I saw advanced riders. I loved this spot because it is not crowded. How to get there: You have to fly in to Fortalezza and from there take a bus to Jijoca. From Jijoca you can take a special bus (www.fretcar.com.br) to Jericoacoara and from Jeri a dune buggy/4x4 OR you take a dune buggy/4x4 from Jijoca to Prea direct. I heard that they plan an airport in Jijoca but I don't know by when it will be realised - check this opportunity

Description

Kitesurfing in and around Preá

In the northern part of Brazil, in the state of Ceara, many of you will know about windsurfing mecca Jericoacoara, famous for its strong winds and wide beaches. For kitesurfers, the hotspot in this region is Preá, a small fishing village 12km east of Jericoacoara. This town features equally beautiful beaches to say the least, and even stronger winds than 'Jeri' (23-30 knots).

Preá kitespots

The wide, sandy beach of Preá is 15km long and offers more than enough space to setup and launch your kite. The spot is suitable for all levels: For beginning kitesurfers, the low tide provides ideal conditions, with shallow and flat waters. At high tide, the area is the perfect playground for intermediate and expert kitesurfers when waves appear.

Downwiders are recommended for advanced kitesurfers at Preá too. Get a dune buggy to drop you off at the east side of the beach and follow you the 15km long coastline on a virtually guaranteed side-shore wind.

To top it, there are also several great flat water lagoons nearby, including Lagoa Azul and Lagoa da Torta, although winds can be slightly more gusty there.

Climate

Visit Preá between July and December, when this region is one of the windiest kitesurfing destinations worldwide. The SE trades usually blow around 20 knots in the morning, building up to 25-30 knots in the early afternoon. Avoid the rainy season between (March, April and May) when winds are less reliable too. Boardshorts are comfortable enough throughout the year, with water temperatures between 25-27°C (77-81°F).

Getting there

This kitesurf destination is relatively difficult to get to, being far from any big Brazilian city (which on the bright side means far from Brazilian crime too). Fortaleza is the nearest international airport, at 300km from Preá. The road infrastructure is good in this area, so it will probably take you three to four hours by car. Taking a bus can save you some money, but take a total of six hours. If budget is not an issue, helicopters can get you here in 45 minutes and cost 8,000 Real for five people (c. €700 each).

Getting around

Dune buggies are the most widely used way of transportation in the area. You can only rent a buggy without a driver if you hire it for several days. Rentals for a day are including driver. Hiring a car (preferably 4x4) is recommended if you wish to explore the area icluding the many kitesurf spots along the coastline.
