Kitesurfing in Sal
The island Sal, part of the Cape Verde islands located just off the coast of West Africa, is the perfect winter destination for European kitesurfers. A flight of only 6 hours (from London) will offer excellent kitesurfing conditions. Winds are strong and consistent, and a good variety of spots exists. Although Sal might not be the perfect place for learning, intermediate and advanced kitesurfers will enjoy a perfect blend of freeriding and wave riding. Sal's most famous spots are located in the South: Kite Beach in the Southeast, Santa Maria Beach at the southern tip, and Ponte Preta in the Southwest.
Kite Beach
Kite Beach, c. 20 minute by car from Santa Maria, offers reasonably flat waters and is a good area for learning kitesurfers as well as for those practicing their freestyle moves. Winds are side-onshore and are very consistent. Only downside is that there are few facilities here.
Kitespot Santa Maria Bay
The large bay at Santa Maria, where most surfers are based during their stay, is also a beatiful and an easily accessible spot. There is much space to setup and launch your kite, and the bay provides ample room to make long runs. Should you come to Sal as a beginner, this is your best option. Surf Zone Cabo Verde, the largest kite-, wind- and surf-school on the island, is located in this bay (as well as in Ponta Preta) with a team that can teach you in 8 different languages. Further up the bay there are some small to medium waves, perfect for learning.
Wave riding at Ponta Preta
Ponta Preta will be the best choice for those seeking waves (3-6m high). This place is only for experienced kitesurfers as wind is usually cross-offshore and no rescue services are available here.
I am going to SAL boxing day for 10 days and will need to hire some kit, Staying Santa Maria. I am a beginner just completing my first run on the board. Are there any veterans who can guide me for lessons, kit hire contacts?
