Description

Kitesurfing in San Andres Island

One of the lesser known kitesurfing destinations, the isolated Caribbean island San Andres is a turquoise water paridise and truly a hidden gem. Part of Colombia but totally safe, beautiful and inexpensive, San Andres has great kitesurfing conditions. There are kilometres of long, white-sand beaches with warm waters, and plenty of room for everyone, from beginner to expert. Wind blows all year on this 15km long strip of land, and it does not matter from which direction: A short trip will lead you to a beautiful spot on each and every shore of the island.

Kitesurfing hotspot Marazul Beach

On the east side, you'll find Marazul Beach, the most popular spot to kitesurf. It is man made, but paradise: A huge playground with flat to choppy water, and waves further out. At low tide, the water is standing-depth until c. 100m from shore, so a great place for beginners. One should be cautious when entering or exiting the beach though, as the beach is small. The wind is usually side-onshore.

Kitesurfing around Islote Sucre

We also recommend a boat trip to Johnny Cay, also known as Islote Sucre. It is the nearest small island to San Andres which offers great kitesurfing on clear waters, next to white sandy beaches with by coconut trees.

In short, check out San Andres before the rest of the world finds out about it!

When to go

Climate

The northern trade winds begin to take shape in November and really take shape between December and February. The summer period, between June and September is another good window for kitesurfing with reliable winds. Avoid rainy months such as September, October, April and May. Waters are warm all year, so no need to bring a wetsuit.

Getting around

The island is small so there is no real need to rent a car, also given that plenty of buses and taxis are available. A taxi ride to the outer beaches will cost no more than 10,000 COP. If you do however want to be flexible, cars and mopeds can be hired.
