Kitesurfing in Sardinia
Located in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea, the white sand beaches and Caribbean-like waters of Sardinia are ideal for kitesurfing. Excellent wind and water conditions complete the picture, particularly in spring and fall. Highlights of Sardinia are the famous Porto Pollo in the Northeast, and the somewhat lesser known southwest coast.
Kitesurfing hotspot Porto Pollo
Porto Pollo is a huge crescent-shaped bay with white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, separated into two parts by a sandy peninsula. Conditions are are ideal for beginners and freestylers, with flat waters that are great for long (downwind) runs. This spot works well in almost any wind direction. Also within good reach are many spots with a small surf break.
Kitespots in Southwest Sardinia
In the Southwest, the hotspots for kitesurfing are Il Poetto, Chia, Porto Botte, Fontanamare and Capo Mannu. Il Poetto is the name of the 7km long city beach of Cagliari, which is a great flat water venue, with clean waves appearing in south-western winds. On the southernmost point, Chia is a stunningly beautiful spot, where water conditions change dependent on the wind as well. Waves (of up to 3m!) prevail in strong SW winds, while the spot is great for freeriding in light winds. Porto Botte doesn't have the beatiful Sardinian nature, but is popular for the relatively strong (side-shore) winds that are accelerated by the Sant'Antioco Peninsula. With flat and often shallow waters, this is a great place for freestyle kitesurfing. Further up lie the best spots on the island for wave riding: Fontanamare is a spot with a beach break producing medium waves in NW mistral winds, hard to reach but the trip - through one of Sardinia's most pristine areas - is worth it. Last but definitely not least, Capo Mannu is one of the greatest wave spots in the Mediterranean Sea, unfortunately for pros only.
