Description

Kitesurfing in St Lucia

St. Lucia, one of the relatively unknown Caribbean islands, is a small and lush volcanic island, typified by the twin Pitons, two stunning cone-shaped peaks, each over 700 metres high. With unspoiled beaches and a long season of warm and consistent trade winds (from November until August), St. Lucia is one of the best kitesurfing destinations worldwide.

Kitesurfing hotspot Savannes bay

Savannes Bay is the spot we recommend, where NE trades produce consistent, side-shore winds (of c. 20-25 knots). Protection from a reef allows for perfect flat water conditions in the first 200 meters from shore. The spot is easily accessible, at a few kilometres from the international airport in the South of St. Lucia.

Kitespot Vieux Fort

Another worldclass kitesurf spot in the South is Vieux Fort, also known as 'Anse des Sables' or 'Sandy Beach'. A bit more choppy than Savannes Bay, but still relatively flat, the beach is suitable to all levels. Near this spot, you can find the reknown 2elements Watersports Centre, which provides courses for beginners as well as advanced kitesurfers.

Kitespot Cas en Bas

Cas en Bas is the best spot in the North of St. Lucia. It's a large bay on the Atlantic side of the island, offering something for every type of kitesurfer. Similar to Savannes Bay, the spot is protected by an offshore reef and the bay is flat like butter, great for learning and practicing freestyle. Advanced kitesurfers can move out of the bay and ride the cleanest waves breaking on the reef.

When to go

Climate

St Lucia has a hot, tropical climate throughout the year, which is tempered by predominant NE trade winds. These are most reliable between November and June, when wind speeds are 20-25 knots on average. Within this period, the dry period is the best time to visit the island, running from February to May, while the wet season occurs between from June and September. The air temperature varies between 25-27°C (77-81°F), equal to water temperatures.

Getting there

St. Lucia has two airports, but - when travelling from Europe or the US - you will probably land on Hewanorra, the international airport in the South of the island. The airport is near Savannes Bay and Vieux Fort, but a 2-hour taxi ride from Cas en Bas. The smaller smaller airport in the north, named Vigi, is only half an hour from Cas en Bas.

Getting around

As St. Lucia is known for its scenery, we recommend you to rent a car (preferably a 4x4) and drive along the coastline. This way, you'll find many bays with small islets and hidden coves. If you plan to visit all kitesurfing spots, you will need a car as well as the distance between them is relatively large.

What else to do

The island of St. Lucia naturally offers much more than just (kite)surfing. There is the posibility to go scuba diving, mountain biking, kayaking or hiking. You can explore the vast tropical rainforest inland, where a trail calles Barre de l'Isle is recommended. It will give you best views of the island with its twin Pitons. Or just cruise around for a day in a 4x4, for example to Mount Soufriere, a volcano that you can drive into.
