Description

Kitesurfing in Tarifa

Spanish Tarifa, also known as the windy capital of Europe, is a great destination for kitesurfing: With over 300 days of wind per year, it has the highest reliability for good conditions. This is all due to a venturi effect: wind is squeezed between the two land masses of Spain and North Africa. Whether this happens from the West (Poniente winds) or from the East (the stronger Levante winds), there is always a suitable kitesurf spot to be found within short reach.

Kitespots: Los Lances & Valdevaqueros

The kitespots in Tarifa are divided between the two beaches Los Lances and Valdevaqueros. Los Lances is the better option with the westerly Poniente, when swell from the Atlantic creates an awesome playground with great waves. Kitesurfing on the beach of Valdevaqueros is possible with both winds, but better in the easterly Levante. This strip generally has flatter water conditions and side-off shore winds, and the dunes of Punta Paloma further downwind make sure that less experienced kitesurfers will always find land. Note that there are restrictions for kitesurfing in the busy summer months (June-September).

In short, with Poniente and Levante creating such a good mix of conditions, Tarifa is a great place for kitesurfing. This goes particularly for more experienced kiters, for beginners it can sometimes be challenging.

When to go

Climate

As you might have anticipated from the description above, kitesurfing is possible in Tarifa in every month of the year. We recommend visiting between March and October, as the winter months can be very clouded and chilly (with water temperatures of c. 16°C / 61°F). For learning kitesurfers, summer is the best period when the Poniente prevails. Water then heats up to over 20°C / 68°F, so you will only need a shorty.

Getting there

For Europeans, driving down to Tarifa is a possibility although it will still probably be several thousands of kilometres for most citizens. Toll and fuel prices will not make it very cheap either. For the majority it will be better to fly to Malaga, Jerez or Gibraltar. While Gibraltar is closest to Tarifa, Malaga is recommended as it has more regular and cheaper flights. All of these airports offer taxis or buses to Tarifa, and car hire is available too.

Getting around

Although there are good bus and taxi services in and around Tarifa, we recommend hiring a car sice there is much to see within driving distance. It is cheap (as of €15 per day) and it will also give you the flexibility to visit other kitespots such as Canos de Meca, 1 hour west of Tarifa.

What else to do

Should you be so unlucky to experience a day without wind, there are some nice alternatives to kite- or windsurfing. Definitely visit Gibraltar or take a ferry and spend a day in Tanger, Morocco. You can also go hiking or horseback riding in the mountains of Betis, and if you're lucky, you'll be able to go whalewatching in the strait of Gibraltar (there's a 90% likelihood of spotting whales or dolphins).
