Description

Kitesurfing in Zanzibar

Located just off the coast of Tanzania's capital Dar-es-Salaam, Ungaja - generally referred to as Zanzibar - is a true kitesurfing paradise. The island is blessed with a tropical climate, and two long seasons with reliable winds (15-25 knots) allow for kitesurfing during the better part of the year (see 'When to go'). On top of this, the long, white sand beaches, and the calm, crystal clear waters - with only few people on it - make your kiting holiday at Zanzibar really enjoyable. Most of Zanzibar‘s east coast is protected by a large coral reef. In the shallow lagoons between the coast and the coral reef, kitesurfing is really easygoing, simply perfect for beginners and freeriders. At high tide, kitesurfing is also possible outside of the reef, where you can spot a dolphin if you're lucky. On the reef itself, advanced riders can enjoy very clean waves.

Kitespots Paje and Kiwengwa

There are two main kitespots on Unguja: The first is situated on the southeast coast in Paje, the second on the northeast coast in Kiwengwa. There are good facilities at both spots, including kitesurf schools, rentals, and rescue services with jet skis.

When to go

Climate

Kusini and Kaskasi are the prevailing trade winds on Zanzibar: Kusini, running from mid-June to mid-October blows most consistently from the South, parallel to the east coast. The wind starts-off every day at a speed of 15-20 knots, building up to 20-25 knots by the end of the afternoon. Kaskasi trade winds run from mid-December to mid-April, blowing from the North. The wind speed varies a little more during this period, but overall it is still reliable. Water conditions are a little rougher during this period too. Water temperatures hover around 26°C (79°F) all year, so you'll be good in your boardshorts and lycra.

Getting around

Getting around on Zanzibar Island can be a bit of a problem. You can use the local Dala-Dala (converted minibuses), which are cheap but often overcrowded and not that safe. They can be suitable for shorter distances. Car rental can be a solution, which is cheap (from $10 per day), but you have to be a bit adventurous...

What else to do

Zanzibar has made its name as one of the best destinations for scuba diving worldwide. The corals there are beautiful, there is abundant marine life, and visibility is really good (between 20-60 metres). The best months for diving are from September to March. Besides scuba diving, there's swimming with dolphins, all the regular water sports are available and of course there's the option of doing absolutely nothing...
